The ABC’s of the DOC: Adventure, Beauty, and Culture

The DOC measures progress toward long-term goals in five core business areas:

National Heritage

DOC continues to monitor statuses and trends, giving New Zealanders a more robust picture of the health of their ecosystems and survival of native species. For example, DOC makes sure that the marine environments are sanitary to allow locals to harvest fish, which brings revenue into the country.

Historical Heritage

DOC identifies and assesses historic heritage values to inform work priorities, and they empower communities and stakeholders to look after historic places important to them.

DOC is continuing to adapt the public recreation network to match the demographic trends and changing demand for outdoor recreation. In fact, 48% of New Zealanders 18 years old and over visited public conservation land last year for activities such as short day walks and camping.

DOC is on a mission to engage with more people to convey the value of conservation benefits. Many different groups of people, including regional councils and citizen volunteers, have donated time, talent, and funds to the cause of conservation.

Commercial Business

There is increasing engagement of the commercial sector in conservation, with businesses entering new partnerships with DOC and building on established relationships. For example, Fonterra, a leading multinational dairy company, is partnering with DOC on a NZ$20 million community investment over 10 years to improve natural habitats of key waterways.

Customer Snapshot: Success Strategy

Vision: Making New Zealand the Greatest Living Space on Earth

In order to fulfill their mission of protecting the natural and historic heritage of New Zealand, the DOC employs 350 rangers and 25 inspectors to manage 100,000 work orders and conduct 15,000 inspections (respectively) annually. The DOC collects a wealth of data from the field, which must be utilized to make informed and strategic decisions to make their vision a reality.

The Challenge

An Endangered Species Not Worth Saving: Inefficient Data Collection

Rangers and inspectors in national parks faced challenges as they tried to transmit accurate and timely data to the DOC for required asset management and maintenance. Data uploads, prior to implementing the SAP Work Manager mobile app, could take hours, and waste a huge amount of time. Rangers and inspectors were distracted by slow and clunky data transfers, which prevented them from focusing on their core tasks of ensuring that visitors are safe and having a great time.
