Business Model

Improving the flow

Elster leverages strong market share in developed countries and builds new opportunities in emerging nations as well. With one of the most extensive installed revenue measurement bases in the world (over 200 million metering modules deployed in the last ten years), Elster connects technology with global energy and resources.

Success Strategy

Going end-to-end

Elster’s business growth strategy is simple: offer more end-to-end solutions that support both global gasification and advanced metering.

The Challenge

Standard time

Going Public

In going public, Elster needed to comply with Sarbanes-Oxley Act requirements, and their IT team had to standardize internal security controls across the business. They had to unify financial process monitoring, manage an IPCF (integrated process and control framework) with heterogeneous systems, and improve transparency as well.

Enter SAP

Finding a partner

Given Elster’s requirements, SAP was selected based on its reputation, expertise in access and process control software, and ability to meet needs of IT, business users, and auditors. Elster was also impressed by the full integration of governance, risk, and compliance software across all SAP solutions.

The SAP Experience

Making it happen

Working with Protiviti, Elster first developed a proof of concept (PoC), which led to creating the project’s overall architecture and ensuing implementation. The deployment finished on schedule and within budget, delivering value to the business very quickly.

Running Better

Reducing Corrective Actions

With its new process and control systems, Elster has reduced the need to continuously audit by 25%. Access issues can now be identified and resolved early. There are transparent processes and audit trails in place, and increased visibility and automation for compliance. Best of all, intelligent access and process control has improved efficiency.

Elster has successfully implemented its access and control systems and continues to operate its business with confidence, knowing all systems are secure, transparent, and in full compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley Act requirements.

The Future

To further streamline and simplify operations, Elster is working to unify globally via SAP. By running the same processes worldwide, Elster expects to achieve greater efficiency at a much lower cost.
