A Fresh Approach for Hand-Roasted Coffee

carbon-neutral coffee roastery developed in
the world

Founded in 1999, Java Republic has expanded its hand-roasted coffee business across all of Ireland, setting industry standards for ethics along the way. But with this growth, inefficiencies cropped up, and Java needed a way to integrate operations, including production, service, asset management, dispatch, and finance. That’s SAP’s cup of coffee.

Inspired by a cup of coffee

In 1995, David McKernan, a passionate coffee enthusiast, visited San Francisco’s famous Caffe Roma. He decided on the spot that he wanted to do something just like it back home in Dublin, Ireland.

  • 1998David McKernan began 19-month research project on coffee roasting and branding
  • 1999With funding secured, Java Republic moved into its first roastery, developed blends for three months, and sold its first case of coffee to Weston Aerodrome
  • 2000Company became profitable in second year of trading
  • 2005Java Republic entered the retail market, and appointed Douglas Wallace as architect for the new Roastery
  • 2007 Company continued to expand product range with substantial growth in tea sales
  • 2008New production facility and “The Roastery” coffee house opened
  • 2009Won the SFA National small business environmental sustainability award

The Challenge

Coffee-fueled growth

By 2007, Java Republic had grown beyond its existing operations. It had run up against the limits of its back-office software – which was no longer capable of providing accurate and timely management information, and also failed to provide visibility across operations. Anticipating further growth, Java now needed an integrated solution.

“Our existing system was not integrated in terms of production, stock, sales, and the general ledger for reporting purposes.”

Enter SAP

Finding the right blend

Having met with Intelligent Information Systems Ltd. (IIS), an SAP gold partner, Java Republic visited a number of IIS customer reference sites to see SAP Business One in action. As a result, the decision was easy: based on the reputation of IIS and SAP Business One, and good references from customers, it chose to implement SAP software.

“We wanted to make sure that we had a solution that was nearly bulletproof after our experience with our previous custom-built system and its provider.”

The SAP Experience

Enabling growth

SAP Business One has provided a single, affordable application that covers all of Java’s business needs. Fast, flexible and scalable, it offers substantial reporting functionality and an intuitive user interface. Java liked that it was an established brand. It meets the company’s requirements and has supported it during a steep growth period.

Run Simple

Taking care of business

As operations have become more complex, the SAP Business One solution has provided the ideal platform, powering business development and taking Java Republic to the next level. It continues to expand its product range, which now includes specialty real leaf teas and hot chocolate as well as highly regarded coffees.

Journey Ahead

Ready for innovation

Based on the results to date, Java Republic is convinced that its plans for innovation and aspirations for its business will be enabled and supported by SAP Business One and IIS. SAP allows Java Republic to do more of what it does best, even better.
