Using a co-innovation as a service platform, COIL engages the SAP ecosystem to successfully create and enable high-value, co-innovated business solutions.

SAP Co-Innovation Lab (COIL) provides an array of provisioning and consulting services to organizations interested in pursuing co-innovation with SAP and its ecosystem. Its co-innovation as a service platform includes a collection of project services and operational capability comprised of an IP management framework, knowledge brokering, operations and project management, and collaborative methods augmented with both physical and virtual tools and collaborative workspace, providing a unique marketing channel to showcase SAP ecosystem and co-innovation project results.

  • Infrastructure: Software, hardware and networking equipment organized and standardized to automatically create and manage physical and virtualized co-innovation workspaces to support multiple concurrent projects on a mixed SAP and non-SAP landscape.
  • Project management: Includes defining a project’s scope, objectives and processes for collaboration and managerial resources to facilitate the project´s execution. On top of this, consulting during co-innovating, serving with business development activities and showcasing the result to a wide audience are additional measures to support.
  • Knowledge brokering: Acting as a smart interface to SAP and its ecosystem, COIL operation leads through extensive knowledge brokering support project teams to identify and connect with Subject matter and domain expertise. This includes the gathering of knowledge unique to the software, systems, and technologies used within the project. SAP COIL brokers the knowledge desired of COIL project teams from internal sources or from within the SAP ecosystem.
  • Intellectual property management: Dedicated legal resources for specifying contract provisions aimed at promoting collaboration and trust among parties by means of bilateral agreements enabling co-innovation. 

SAP has a large, rich and vibrant ecosystem of partners and customers and continuously taps into this raw innovation current through a multitude of innovation programs and initiatives. As such, the SAP Co-Innovation Lab enables dozens of compelling projects each year. These three featured cases provide a glimpse into co-innovation projects all sharing an interest to create solutions encompassing the Internet of Things. 

Tech Mahindra: Fresh Produce End to End Digital Supply Chain (FEEDS)

Tech Mahindra offers innovative and customer-centric information technology services and solutions. The company collaborated with SAP at the SAP Co-Innovation Lab to develop a revolutionary initiative to manage the food supply chain, enabling companies to transport farm-grown produce and deliver it as fresh as if it were grown locally. FEEDS enables business collaboration, and maintains product quality and freshness, while providing a 15-20% reduction in losses and waste.

  • Reacting to Needs: Fresh produce delivery faces the challenge of lacking real-time supply chain visibility, making informed decision making for supply chain planners difficult and raising the potential for a high degree of spoilage and waste. To exacerbate the issue, a multitude of players (farmers, cold chains, transporters/retailers, etc.), each with their own back-end systems, create an inability to trace back and ensure adherence to compliance norms. This drives an overall lack of collaboration and non-optimal reaction to dynamic supply chain events.
  • COIL Project: Tech Mahindra came together with SAP at COIL Bangalore to develop FEEDS, a co-innovation project designed to deliver improved traceability and a reduction in waste as food moves from the farm to the consumer, while also enabling a regulatory compliance framework.
  • Results: The Tech Mahindra FEEDS solution provides real time visibility of the fresh produce supply chain with an end-to-end, unified digital platform connecting different parts of the business network. It is powered by SAP HANA and integrated with back end systems like ERP, SCM and point of sale systems. FEEDS provides a unified common platform with a freshness index, condition monitoring, and collaboration between business network partners. Built on the SAP HANA Cloud Platform for the Internet of Things, the solution is accessible via easy to use, role-based mobile apps and offers an intuitive interface with back end systems.
  • Discovery: From Use Case Definition to GTM activities, the project team’s engagement at COIL was highly useful to Tech Mahindra. Evangelizing within SAP forums and the pursuit of certification was very valuable, as was the extended expert COIL brought to the formation of FEEDS, easing the path to monetization.

ISTN: Smart Bulkbin Solution for Farmers and Feed Providers

This IoT-focused SAP Co-Innovation Lab project originated from our lab in South Korea. ISTN is an SAP Gold Partner that recently focused on solving a significant problem for farmers and feed providers, using IoT sensors and ability to both know and predict volumes and bin levels. To make the solution more affordable to the target market, the insights provided are scalable and offered as a service from the SAP HANA Cloud Platform. The ISTN solution as described in this use case is composed of an architecture that can manage an array of sensor data input, making it relevant and useful in many industries.

  • Reacting to Needs: Despite global 21st century agricultural knowledge and practice, most customers place orders to providers by telephone for necessities like cattle feed. In such a scenario errors can easily creep in due to something as simple as the farmer conveying unclear feed information. A simple miscommunication can cause many problems in systems like order management and production planning. Precise orders and predictable production planning would require the right solution to provide exact bin status with feed information for ordering.
  • COIL Project: The COIL program supported a fast start to help ISTN establish a project environment to support IoT technology exploration. COIL facilitated a design thinking session with customers, ISTN and SAP, offering a crisp view of the customer environment and a chance to clearly identify key personas of the primary users of the solution. With an understanding of deployment requirements, COIL could provision a proxy to the target environment that was useful for testing and observation. This allowed the ISTN innovation team to focus on problem solving with bin data as opposed to determining how to stand up and manage the underlying infrastructure.
  • Results: ISTN developed its Smart Bulkbin solution by taking advantage of the COIL project output and prepared for SAP certification. ISTN worked with SAP development and business teams at COIL to collaborate strategically and create key proofs of concept. The co-innovation team discovered the end-customers’ unmet needs of order accuracy, on-time ordering, and cost saving. ISTN and members of the SAP Partner Solution Center approached this challenge together using design thinking and COIL as a platform and coaching provider for a pilot project. The Smart Bulkbin Solution demo continues to be featured from COIL.
  • Discovery: Through its COIL project, ISTN confirmed the importance of fully understanding the customer’s perspective and gained empathy for how the problem effects customers and their business. This understanding became fundamental to every dimension of the project, from ideating complete new processes to implementation requirements and end-user experience. There was ongoing discovery relevant to use of IoT technology and optimizing use of sensor data. ISTN, in collaboration with other customers and SAP business stakeholders, uncovered the value derived from a co-innovation approach, taking advantage of rich collaboration that helps reduce risk and accelerate time to market.

Telit: deviceWISE IoT solution with SAP Predictive Maintenance and Service

Telit offers a broad portfolio of integrated products, platforms and services to support and enable IoT deployments from things to apps, with a modern system architecture that can be deployed on premise or in the cloud. Telit and the SAP Predictive Maintenance and Service (PdMS) product team engaged COIL to perform technical and functional tests of the Telit deviceWISE IoT platform with SAP PdMS as an on premise IoT solution for the enterprise and to pursue the SAP quality certification process assessing the solution’s compatibility with the business functions of SAP PdMS.

  • Reacting to Needs: Many SAP customers find their machine data segmented in silos based on the manufacturers of their devices. Telit collaborated with SAP at the SAP Co-Innovation Lab in an effort to make it easy to establish direct connections to these data sources, configure what data is to be read and how often, and copy the data to a central computing/analytics platform like SAP PdMS. The primary value proposition was to improve asset reliability, increase productivity, reduce operating costs, and ensure compliance. Telit’s deviceWISE gateway and multi-tenant cloud manages the collection of machine/asset data from both in-plant controllers and remote or roaming assets. As a result of the partnership, this SAP Solex IoT-based solution facilitates the data transfer from assets to SAP on-premise IoT business solutions such as SAP PdMS.
  • COIL Project: COIL offered Telit the right environment to explore how it would pass the rigorous quality testing needed to be certified as an SAP Solution Extension. The project established variously configured virtual machines to provide for things like IoT sensor load data, data gateways, the SAP HANA in-memory computing platform, and the SAP PdMS application suite. The team ran numerous tests against multiple use cases such as anomaly detection, distance based failure analysis, and remaining useful life prediction.
  • Results: The project work done at COIL provided the right landscape and test configurations to help establish the final Telit SAP Solution Extension that would be deployed by target customers. Telit was able to quickly test early assumptions relevant to optimizing all points of integration and run multiple scenarios to prepare for its successful SAP certification testing and validation.
  • Discovery: Partners invariably learn important lessons from the hands-on effort to build a co-innovated solution. Using the COIL lab environment, Telit was able to test its assumptions and learn through important experimentation and observation a more optimal path to forming the level of integration needed to meet the requirements of this solution extension.
