Supporting a new business model with a standardized solution

Acquired by Tetra Pak in 2020, Tetra Pak eBeam Systems AG provides electron beam solutions for the packaging industry. This innovative “eBeam” technology enables energy-efficient, chemical-free sterilization of packages, saving resources and improving the sustainability of production processes.

Tetra Pak eBeam Systems was running its operations on the legacy software it was using before acquisition, SAP ERP Central Component (SAP ECC). The company wanted to take a more standardized approach, enabling it to simplify system maintenance and save costs. For this reason, Tetra Pak eBeam Systems decided to deploy a public cloud ERP.

Strategizing for an ERP migration

Tetra Pak is a long-standing customer of SAP software, and when Tetra Pak eBeam Systems looked for a standardized, public cloud ERP solution it turned to SAP Cloud ERP. The subsidiary worked with experts from SAP Services and Support and used SAP Enterprise Support services to ease the transition.

Using the SAP Activate methodology, the team took a systematic approach to the implementation of SAP Cloud ERP. This involved fit-to-standard workshops where SAP consultants helped Tetra Pak eBeam Systems explore the standardized processes supported by the solution.

The SAP experts also interviewed business users to better understand their needs and made recommendations based on the company’s required scope. Business users were involved at every stage of the process from planning and scoping to configuration and testing, helping ensure that the solution met the requirements of each line of business.

To get an overview of implementation tasks and track progress, the implementation team used the SAP Cloud ALM tool. This application lifecycle management solution also provides monitoring capabilities to help ensure that SAP Cloud ERP functions optimally, highlighting any issues so that they can be resolved promptly.

Enhancing user experiences while easing IT workloads

With its new, modern cloud ERP in place, employees at Tetra Pak eBeam Systems are benefiting from an enhanced user experience. Intuitive interfaces make it easier to find the information they need, while the ability to access the solution on a range of devices provides the flexibility to work from any location.

For the IT department, the move to SAP Cloud ERP has resulted in a significant reduction in the time spent on system maintenance. With the standardized cloud solution, upgrades now happen automatically. It previously took one day to prepare for each new release, as well as additional efforts to add customizations afterward. However, no involvement is now required from the IT team—reducing running costs and freeing time to spend on more-strategic tasks.

In addition, executing a test data refresh is now faster and more straightforward, resulting in minimal downtime. This means that the IT team can run tests using a copy of the latest production data, enabling Tetra Pak eBeam Systems to be more innovative and try out new approaches more effectively.

Establishing a foundation for increased efficiency and productivity

Tetra Pak eBeam Systems is now focusing on optimizing how it uses SAP Cloud ERP to maximize value to the business. This includes change management activities to help staff adapt to a more standardized way of working while taking advantage of advanced features to improve productivity.

Going forward, Tetra Pak eBeam Systems anticipates that the transition to standardized processes will help the company become more competitive, enabling increased efficiency and productivity. In addition, the move away from customization will open up new opportunities for collaboration with mother company Tetra Pak, enabling further efficiency gains and cost savings.
