At SAP, we build breakthroughs, together.
While there are many things I enjoy about working on Concur, what motivates me most at work are the people and the culture. We have the space for open and honest conversations. Regardless of the problem, everyone is accepting of feedback and passionate about working together to find solutions.
Jessica Yeung began her SAP career three years ago as an intern and is now a Software Developer for SAP Concur based in Vancouver, Canada. We asked her to tell us her SAP story.
I studied Cognitive Systems at university, an interdisciplinary program combining Philosophy, Linguistics, Psychology, and Computer Science. My degree focused mainly on the theoretical aspects of designing computationally intelligent systems and was fairly research oriented. Being the type to like trying new things and working with systems hands-on, I knew that in addition to research, I also wanted to explore the more practical applications of computational systems. This led me to seek out several software development internships while completing my degree – and that’s how I arrived at SAP.
During my time interning at SAP, I met a lot of people who were not only friendly and supportive, but also extremely passionate about the products they were building. Interacting with and learning from these individuals really strengthened my interest in software development and convinced me to continue pursuing a career in this direction. I came back to SAP after graduating and now work as a Software Developer for Concur Travel, a platform which enables employees from our customer organizations to book business travel.
My day-to-day work involves maintaining our existing Travel product, while actively building out a new version of the product from the ground up – known as Travel 2. Concur has seen some rapid growth over the last few years so Travel 2 has been an attempt to tackle some of the challenges involved with delivering a product at scale. Since we are starting from scratch and transitioning away from a monolith to microservices, it has been a great opportunity for us as developers to influence the design of the product from an early stage, to address any pain points we have, and also to work with many cutting-edge technologies.
The exposure to the wide range of technologies we use, and the resulting learning opportunities is something I really enjoy about my work. As a person who loves travelling, it is also a plus that I work on a travel product and am able to learn about travel from a different perspective. I consider a career highlight of mine to be booking trips using the product I work on to meet new coworkers in different offices across the globe.
While there are many things I enjoy about working on Concur, what motivates me most at work are the people and the culture. We have the space for open and honest conversations. Regardless of the problem, everyone is accepting of feedback and passionate about working together to find solutions. Yet most importantly, the organization has an appreciation for diversity. My immediate team is small but we’re relatively diverse in terms of age, gender, and ethnicities. Everyone brings something different to the table and we really embrace those differences.
