Industry Foundations Above and Below Ground
What started as a two-man machine shop in 1884, now provides more than 90 percent of the world’s surface mines with shovels, draglines, and drilling machinery. Similarly, what started as drawings from a 20-year-old correspondence course graduate became the foundation for what is now a global leader in the development, manufacture, distribution, and service of underground mining machinery. The two companies, P&H, and Joy Mining Machinery, merged in 1994 to become Joy Global Inc.

Joy Global's products and related services are used extensively for the mining of coal, copper, iron ore, oil sands, gold, and other mineral resources.

Performance, safety, and profitability all benefit from operational excellence initiatives like the one at Joy Global. But multiple systems prevented the global data sharing and analysis. Joy Global serves customers from more than 130 facilities worldwide, and the company wanted to boost customer productivity and service levels by gaining better control of their supply chain and deeper insight into their own products and manufacturing by expanding use of SAP solutions.

Traditional paper-based methods of training and knowledge transfer can’t adequately support the expansion of Joy Global’s manufacturing and service businesses into emerging markets in China and Russia. Joy Global was looking for an end-to-end solution that would increase the speed of information transfer—for both employees and customers—and eliminate the looming expense of producing and printing training and service manuals.
One model for everything.
The heavy machinery that Joy Global manufactures requires maintenance to minimize customer downtime. Accordingly, Joy Global wants to optimize their supply chain to have parts available when customers need them. Joy Global turned to SAP for their supply chain experience to straddle the fine line that separates the overhead of carrying too much inventory from the expense and inconvenience to customers when a part is not available.

Furthermore, 3D visualization solutions from SAP help develop deeper understanding of product construction and use, thus enabling continuous process improvement. To help Joy Global promote the solution internally, personnel from SAP assisted in drafting the business case that was submitted to Joy Global’s executive management.
To provide additional control of and visibility into Joy Global’s worldwide operations, SAP recommended expanding implementations of SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (SAP ERP) and SAP Business Planning and Consolidation applications. With the SAP Manufacturing Integration and Intelligence (SAP MII), Joy Global can combine factory floor data with data from SAP ERP so shop floor managers can see in real-time how they are performing relative to production plans.
Joy Global is improving data visibility into their vast network of suppliers with the SAP Supply Network Collaboration (SAP SNC) application. With SAP Enterprise Inventory and Service-Level Optimization, Joy Global can more effectively analyze the links between inventory investments and customer service goals.
The SAP applications enable Joy Global to combine information such as design metadata, manufacturing and assembly processes, supplier information, inventory levels, and costs, and shapes them into a visual presentation. Employees and customers have access to information that lets them visualize equipment, helping improve speed, efficiency, and safety.
The latest investments Joy Global has made in SAP ERP and SAP Business Planning and Consolidation are paying dividends throughout the organization, from finance to supply chain to customer satisfaction. For example, a typical electric shovel contains more than 18,000 parts. Joy Global remotely tracks the performance of every vehicle and collects every service request, repair job, and replacement part for every machine in the field and is using the data to forecast refurbishment requirements, both for their customers and their own inventories.

Customer service levels have increased five basis points and customers have positively acknowledged that parts are available when they need them.
