2 Global Platforms
Transformed from 23+
instances
Anglo American embarked on a global ERP transformation
journey, the SAP Anglo Operating Platform (AOP)
consolidation programme. The aim of the programme was to
consolidate all the business units and disparate ERPs onto a
single global SAP template solution, whilst in tandem
performing a technical conversion to SAP S/4HANA.
This also unlocked the ability to support the Finance
Transformation, which improved process standardisation
across the Finance function, including deploying new SAP VIM
and Blackline functionality.
The final consolidation of the largest and most complex
business unit (Platinum) took place in May 2023, which
included implementing SAP Fiori, SAP Extended Warehouse
Management, SAP BTP and SAP Analytics Cloud for planning.
By consolidating Anglo Americans businesses onto a single
SAP S/4HANA platform, we now have the ability to drive
standardisation and future innovations. The end user
experience has improved with the adoption of tools such as
SAP Fiori and the SAP BTP platform features.
Apart from enabling the journey to cloud and potentially Rise in
the future, Anglo American can now extract higher value from
our SAP S/4HANA and cloud investments. This includes
optimising business productivity in noted areas such as global
policy adherence, high-level automation, faster digitisation, and
better user experience.
In 2015 Anglo American had more than 23 different ERP
instances across different technology platforms. This resulted
in a complex environment lacking in functional and technical
standards.
It was a challenge to optimise and harmonise processes, data
and integration across disparate systems - resulting in
increased effort, cost and complexity associated with multiple
end-of-life systems and associated security risks. As a
consequence, the fragmented environment and lack of agility
impacted our ambition to support strategic imperatives at pace
and scale.

We came from a constellation of ERPs supporting our core transactional
processes across finance, maintenance and supply chain. There are many
complexities with running a multinational, but as an efficiency we should be
able to leverage our scale for common benefit but the ERP complexity meant
this has not been in our grasp. We've now completed the journey with one
consolidated SAP platform for Anglo American and another for our De Beers
subsidiary, joined tightly in common process design. This vastly simplifies
our support arrangements, improves our resistance to fraud and cyber
attack, and will facilitate the rapid deployment of Groupwide
improvements. Big projects are hard to deliver. Big projects running beyond
5 years elude the best organisations, and the team and our partners that
secured our transformation are to be credited with a great success. It's been
a career highlight for me.

Accenture
Accenture has achieved many milestones with Anglo American as we’ve proudly been a part
of the SAP ERP consolidation programme from its inception. To support this transformational
journey, we sought to leverage our extensive understanding of Anglo American’s global
business - having been their strategic application management partner for over a decade.
Accenture has been honoured to have partnered with Anglo American on their journey from
the conceptual planning, solutioning as well as serving as the system integration partner to
implement the SAP Advanced Planning and Optimization solution for the various business
units, coupled with the implementation of the Finance Transformation program.
Accenture was able to leverage it’s global footprint of experienced resources, coupled with a
common global methodology closely aligned to Anglo American’s deployment methodology,
along with the ability to leverage global COE’s and SME’s familiar with SAP’s latest
technology and capability, which were critical to the success of the SAP journey.

GLOBAL CHALLENGES BUSINESS CHALLENGES
Challenges and Objectives 1 of 2

As an extractive industry, Mining has been in the spotlight in terms
of safety and sustainability, whilst providing the essential metals
required to support almost every human activity.
Challenges range from the impact of commodity price cycles,
geopolitical instability, disruption to trade flows, managing an
ageing workforce, as well as the increasing impact of the transition
to a green economy.
Commodity price fluctuations place an emphasis on miners to
manage through the cycle, implying the need for very close
management of all inputs, be it cash, materials, equipment and
labour. This also means have the corporate agility to flex with the
cycle, and so having far less variation in processes and systems.
The transition to net zero means diversifying away from steam coal,
but also seizing opportunities to develop and promote new
industries, notably the hydrogen economy, which relies on Platinum
Group Metals.
As a price-taker, Anglo American needs to be able to flex with the
commodity cycle - this means scaling the business appropriately,
as well as dealing with acquisitions and divestments.
Our business support systems evolved independently over
decades, meaning that even back-office activities such as general
accounting were carried out using many different process
variations. These differences ultimately cost the corporation not
only in terms of unnecessary complexity, but also making it
extremely difficult and cumbersome to rapidly deploy changes
across all regions, commodities and operations.
Process variations imply different data structures and systems -
increasing substantially the difficulty in obtaining comparable
information across different business units.
From an application management perspective, the very large
number of systems and interfaces created unnecessary complexity
and cost, whilst increasing controls risk.
