Merging two IT giants into a united enterprise
The merger of Larsen & Toubro Infotech Limited (LTI) and Mindtree Limited (Mindtree) to form LTIMindtree was much more than a union of two companies. Two complex business ecosystems, each with its own processes, systems, and culture, had to be united.
The stakes were high. Could they create a frictionless, efficient enterprise without disrupting operations? What strategies could help them accelerate business growth while maintaining operational stability?
The answers to those questions couldn’t be left to chance for the newly merged company with an ambitious goal of reaching US$10 billion in revenue. LTIMindtree needed a bold transformation strategy to break down silos, standardize operations, and position the business for sustainable growth. A fractured digital landscape will slow decision-making and curb innovation, but with a unified, intelligent digital core, LTIMindtree can move faster, scale smarter, and innovate confidently.
At the heart of this challenge was the need to harmonize critical business functions, including finance, procurement, and human resources. Before the merger, each company operated with separate ERP systems. This fragmented technology environment made cross-business collaboration inefficient, processes inconsistent, and real-time visibility difficult. Without a centralized platform, decision-making was slower, and innovation became much harder to scale.

Building a foundation for business continuity with a clean core approach
LTIMindtree knew it needed a transformation to simplify operations, accelerate decision-making, and establish a single source of truth across the organization. That’s why the team chose the SAP Cloud ERP Private package and SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) as the backbone of the transformation.
With SAP Cloud ERP Private, LTIMindtree consolidated its ERP systems into a standardized solution that supports critical business functions such as finance and procurement (see the figure). The transition was completed within 100 days—a remarkable achievement that minimized disruption and helped ensure continuous innovation.
From the outset, LTIMindtree prioritized a clean core approach to building an ERP foundation that is consistently current and fit for the future while minimizing technical debt and enhancing system agility. This strategy requires keeping customizations to the core of SAP Cloud ERP Private to a minimum while leveraging cloud solutions for extended functionalities.
As a first step, the company leveraged advisory and execution services for intelligent custom code management from SAP Services and Support to assess and streamline its custom code landscape. “The services were like an MRI of our ERP landscape,” describes Rajesh Kumar R, CIO of LTIMindtree. “The diagnostic results gave us a clear view into areas of concern and opportunity. Based on the findings, we could categorize our technical debt into four areas: retire, optimize, extend, and fit to standard.”
Processes that were not part of the cloud ERP’s core were either migrated to SAP BTP, optimized, or retired altogether. To further improve business process efficiency, LTIMindtree adopted SAP Signavio Process Transformation Suite to support data-driven decision-making and process optimization through process modeling and intelligence. The SAP Cloud ALM solution was also used to efficiently manage cloud operations, helping ensure continuous monitoring, governance, and performance optimization.
But the transformation doesn’t stop there. A center of excellence (CoE) comprising IT, finance, and business leaders was established to carefully evaluate deviations from standard SAP code with a strong preference for extensions based on SAP BTP instead of core modifications.
