A.M.P.E.R.E.: Honing efficiency across warehouse processes with next-generation cloud ERP

Explore A.M.P.E.R.E.’s journey with SAP
To turn customer orders around quickly, warehouse efficiency is a must for metal supplier A.M.P.E.R.E. Deutschland GmbH. However, manual processes and an outdated, on-premise ERP made running agile and streamlined operations a challenge. The company addressed this by implementing warehouse management functionality in SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition.

Digitalizing processes to support business growth
From small-scale beginnings, the A.M.P.E.R.E. Group has grown to become one of Europe’s leading distributors of industrial raw materials, and A.M.P.E.R.E. Deutschland GmbH has played an important role in this success story. Selling everything from metals and chemicals to marking systems and operational safety products, the German reseller is trusted by its customers to turn orders around quickly, with timely and efficient next-day deliveries as standard.
However, A.M.P.E.R.E. Deutschland was managing its day-to-day operations using a decades-old on-premise ERP system, which was complex to maintain and an unattractive proposition to new IT recruits. Furthermore, as it expanded, a heavy reliance on paper-based processes in the company’s warehouses threatened to erode operational efficiency by impacting worker productivity.
To streamline warehouse management and enable it to maintain the high levels of service that its customers rely on, A.M.P.E.R.E. Deutschland wanted to digitalize its processes. In addition, the company wanted to move to a cloud-based ERP solution that would deliver the latest technology innovations while meeting high security standards and making it simpler to manage the IT landscape.

Transitioning to cloud-based operations
A.M.P.E.R.E. Deutschland has a track record of making procurement decisions based on reliability and quality, and a cloud ERP solution from SAP was the obvious choice. However, the reseller wanted to move away from an on-premise model that saw an internal IT team managing the systems landscape. Instead, the company decided to move to a cloud-based solution by implementing SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition.
A.M.P.E.R.E. Deutschland commenced a pilot project across the company’s Germany-based operations. It deployed the solution in just six months, with minimal disruption to business operations. An intuitive user experience has helped enable a smooth and rapid transition to the new ERP software, with workers quickly learning how to use the functionality in an efficient way.
Now, warehouse management functionality in SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition has allowed the company to automate its processes from delivery of goods and managing inventory to picking and dispatching orders. Real-time updates on stock exchange and foreign exchange information also enable accurate and speedy price calculations when fulfilling just-in-time orders for different metal supplies.

Increasing transparency and improving efficiency
The ready availability of real-time information has helped A.M.P.E.R.E. Deutschland increase transparency across its operations. Preconfigured dashboards help managers understand the status of goods and shipments at a glance. Meanwhile, improved visibility of stock movements supports informed decision-making that helps the company streamline operations while better managing inventory. In addition, rapid access to customer order information helps service agents answer customer inquiries faster and more efficiently.
Digitalized and automated workflows have also contributed to significant wins in overall efficiency for A.M.P.E.R.E. Deutschland. For example, switching to sending invoices by e-mail rather than providing customers with paper copies in the post has freed up administrative staff to spend time on higher-value tasks – as well as resulted in monthly savings of over €1,000 for postage.
IT personnel now also have more time to spend on strategic tasks, as there is no requirement for them to carry out routine systems administrative work for SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition. The fully managed cloud solution also benefits from regular updates, enabling the company to take advantage of the latest technological innovations to help it continuously improve operational efficiency.
Working toward 100% paperless warehouse operations
Following the successful pilot project in Germany, the A.M.P.E.R.E. Group now plans to roll out SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition across its European operations. The goal is to implement the multilingual solution in all seven countries in which the group is active, with deployments already scheduled in France, Italy, Spain, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Hungary.
Meanwhile, A.M.P.E.R.E. Deutschland continues to expand its SAP software landscape. The company is testing the SAP Warehouse Operator mobile app to enable workers to use mobile devices to manage warehouse operations such as picking products. This will help eliminate the use of paper and bring in greater process transparency, efficiency, and productivity.
In addition, A.M.P.E.R.E. Deutschland is considering implementing embedded transportation management functionality in SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition. Available at no additional cost to the company, this can help realize savings on transport costs. A.M.P.E.R.E. Deutschland is also looking at the further automation of invoicing processes using the SAP Ariba Central Invoice Management solution. Furthermore, it is exploring ways in which integration between SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition and Microsoft 365 software can deliver productivity gains for its employees.
