This was showcased at the recent Hannover Messe event where I attended a compelling panel discussion between SAP and three partners in the Embodied AI space: Humanoid, Aimbo AG, and ANYbotics AG.

SAP's Embodied AI initiative — part of the Autonomous Enterprise vision — extends SAP's Autonomous Suite from digital orchestration to physical execution, enabling Joule agents to dispatch cognitive robots that perform physical tasks grounded in real-time SAP business context.

The panel explained how SAP’s Embodied AI initiative, by connecting robots to SAP's business processes, enables enterprises to gain unprecedented agility across supply chain operations, from manufacturing and warehousing, all the way to customer delivery and after-sales service. Every robot action is enriched with SAP business context and linked to a measurable downstream outcome.

What is SAP’ Embodied AI?

SAP’s Embodied AI connects SAP's business processes to cognitive robots — quadrupeds, wheeled humanoids, legged humanoids, and drones. Unlike traditional automation, SAP’s Embodied AI enables robots to know why, when, and how to act based on real-time SAP business context.

Through the Embodied AI Service on SAP BTP, every task dispatched by a Joule agent is enriched with location data, order priority, safety constraints, and applicable business rules before reaching the robot. The robot does not receive a bare instruction — it receives a business-contextualized objective. Execution outcomes flow back into SAP applications (Extended Warehouse Management, Asset Performance Management, Environmental Health & Safety, Field Service Management), closing the loop between physical action and digital business process.

Use cases across the chain

Inbound Logistics and Warehousing

Embodied AI optimizes supplier interactions via smart sensors on shipping containers that monitor conditions in real time, predicting delays from weather or port congestion. Drones and robotic scouts verify incoming goods, flagging defects before unloading, movement and picking.

As Jochen Rudat from Humanoid explained, “a lot of companies around the world can't find people anymore either due to lack of resources, extreme costs, or dangerous or physically difficult work environments”.  Rudat gave the example of “a large grocery company has warehouse sized refrigerators. People can only work in this environment for 30 to 40 minutes before they have to go back out and warm up with a lot of tea! Nobody wants to do that, so they are looking to robotics and automation”.

Manufacturing Floors

Yuki Long from Aimbo AG explained that her company “provide an agnostic Industrial Embodied AI middleware to orchestrate robots from multiple manufacturers.

The goal is for these humanoids to work with the current workforce. As Long stated, “factories are currently designed for human beings. The strategic value of humanoid robots is that they can be deployed into the factory without changing the layout. It's going to be an orchestration in harmony of people, humanoid and mobility robots, with cobots, to make the factory truly autonomous and intelligent under the SAP logic”.

As Long concluded, “the humanoid robots would take over these jobs that humans don't like in the beginning, the hazard situation, dangerous situation, night shifts etc. And while doing that, they connect the physical floor directly back to SAP's data loop.”

Here, collaborative robots (cobots) with computer vision can detect assembly flaws instantly, recalibrating on the fly to reduce downtime, waste and customer dissatisfaction.

SAP Embodied AI integrates directly with SAP Digital Manufacturing (DM) and S/4HANA Production Planning, where robot execution data feeds SAP's AI models for predictive maintenance and quality assurance, averting breakdowns that cost millions annually and enabling continuous improvement of robot performance through the SAP Business Data Cloud flywheel.

 Maintenance and Quality Inspections

SAP Embodied AI enhances inspection and quality processes by deploying certified robots (connected to SAP Asset Performance Management (APM), Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), and Field Service Management (FSM)) to identify defects and safety hazards in real time. The Autonomous Inspection process, powered by the Embodied AI Service on BTP, enriches each inspection task with asset criticality, maintenance schedules, and EHS compliance requirements from SAP master data. Anomalies automatically trigger APM maintenance notifications, EHS safety observations, and FSM service orders, closing the loop between physical observation and enterprise action.

By continuously capturing robot execution data in SAP Business Data Cloud, inspection models improve with every deployment cycle.

As Jochen Rudat from Humanoid explained, “we see use cases such as inventory count or taking pictures for quality assurance of a part which was produced, and exchanging data between different systems, not only with agents, with ERP systems, with warehouse management system, even the communication between machines is very, very important”.

Nicole Zingg from Anybotics AG talked about the company’s quadrupedal inspection robot that is specifically designed for heavy industrial environments as seen in energy, oil and gas, fine chemical and materials production environments explaining, “our robot is built to operate and work well in environments that are dirty, dusty and dangerous”. She continued, “we enable companies to interact with our robot as they would any human inspector on their staff. Then you can leverage all of the historical supply chain data that exists in SAP to more finely tune models so that our customers get better insights, and improved operational behavior in their environment”.

Nicole Zingg from Anybotics AG highlighted some maintenance benefits such as asset uptime and extended asset lifetimes, stating “we are seeing Animal (Anybotics quadruped ) spot notable anomalies in customers system that allows them to take action before something breaks. Or allows them to spot a mechanical anomaly that means that they can take an asset offline before it would suffer damage that would mean it needs to be replaced instead of repaired”.

The Path Forward

Looking ahead, SAP's Embodied AI roadmap promises even deeper integration across the Autonomous Enterprise. As SAP's robot network expands, spanning quadrupeds for inspection, wheeled humanoids for warehouse operations, and legged humanoids for dexterous manufacturing tasks, the Embodied AI becomes the single integration point connecting every robot to every SAP business process.

The SAP Business Data Cloud flywheel compounds this advantage. Each robot deployment generates operational data that improves AI model performance, which in turn enables more reliable deployments. As Nicole Zingg concluded, “the more semantically driven we make robots, the more they should be able to ingest understanding of the operational design domain that they're deployed in, and the core skills and tasks of the humans that they work alongside. The human capacity and requirements for continuing to work should really be about improving whatever the human skill set is even further, removing, extraneous tasks, extraneous work and motion, rather than saying, "Ah, now we need to learn robotic skills."
