At SAP, we build breakthroughs, together.
Joining the SAP Academy for Business Transformation has given me a great chance to experience different teams and understand different business processes early on […] With this overview on different teams, the program has helped me to understand in which area my skillset fits best and where I can contribute most, while at the same time feeling happy and fully energized.
Graduate of the SAP Academy for Business Transformation 2018/19
Briefly describe your journey at SAP so far.
In 2018, my exciting SAP journey has begun as trainee in the Exponential Analytics team, where I have worked with great colleagues on Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to forecast the likelihood of business opportunities to be won. During this time, I have enjoyed the data and logic affinity in this team a lot. The next program rotation took me to another ML team, but now in Singapore. There, I have implemented a prove of concept for a digital meeting assistant, supported by ML. It is amazing to see AI at work!
My last team rotation was a stop in the “Build Customers for Life” program, getting away from the technical side to the process, transformation, and steering side. Which gave me great insights on the challenges of transforming processes including hundreds of employees. But I have found that my home is in a technical area and therefore I have very happily joined a newly build ML team in Singapore after my academy graduation. I have spent 20 wonderful months in Singapore as ML Product Owner before I came back to Walldorf, and back to the Exponential Analytics, now called Infused Intelligence team.
What are you currently doing? How do you describe your role to friends?
Now, back in Infused Intelligence, I am heading the team of 11 beautifully data-crazy colleagues. My job ranges from a lot of administrative and HR related stuff to ML model discussions. My focus is on giving the team a direction and a common goal to deliver best in class ML solutions for most impact full business use cases and reporting and steering scenarios. Many of my discussions are around how to deliver our solutions most successfully and at scale. But my favorite discussion, though, are always around the models and what kind of features could be relevant, what is the expected output, how does this suit to the user’s requirements? I trust in my team as technical experts, and I help them to learn, to grow, to become more visible and more responsible, actively owning their project.
Sometimes my job is about getting the right people together for an end-to-end solution. Who is the right business contact? Who owns the data? Who can help to build an UI or a dashboard? This varies for all our projects since ML can be applied across all lines of business’ and all board areas. Every project is new, every model an experiment, every delivery an exciting journey.
How could the SAP Academy for Business Transformation contribute to opening up this path for you? What tip would you like to share with early talent?
With so many individual teams worldwide, SAP is a complex company with a huge potential for synergies. Joining the SAP Academy for Business Transformation has given me a great chance to experience different teams and understand different business processes early on, to find some of these synergies. In all my rotations, I have asked many questions and I have always been very curious about everything. “Why?” and “How?” and “What if…?” are still my favorite questions to ask. With this overview on different teams, the program has helped me to understand in which area my skill set fits best and where I can contribute most, while at the same time feeling happy and fully energized.
After 3 years within SAP, I am having an active network of around 250 colleagues with whom I connect more or less regularly and the seed for this was planted during the program’s rotations. The gained insights and the connects have helped me to get where I am today and have shaped my view and perception sustainably.
