A 100% Australian owned renewable energy company, Squadron Energy develops, operates, and owns renewable energy assets in Australia. The
organisation have 1.1 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy in operation and growing rapidly. With proven experience and expertise across the project
lifecycle, Squadron Energy works with local communities and customers to lead the transition to Australia’s clean energy future.
With ambitious goals to transform Australia’s energy landscape and meet the target of 14 GW of renewable energy by 2030, Squadron Energy have
sought to expand their operations, recently undertaking a series of strategic acquisitions. However, this expansion highlighted numerous issues with
existing legacy systems and processes, including fragmented platforms, scalability limitations, poor integration, and a heavy reliance on
spreadsheets and manual tasks.
Seeking a best-fit, out-of-the-box solution to be delivered in under four months, Squadron Energy conducted a rapid selection process and
partnered with Deloitte to implement SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud, alongside SAP BTP, SAC, and SAP Concur, through Deloitte’s StartSuccess SAP-
Qualified Partner-Packaged Solution.

Challenges
Positioned to become Australia’s leader in green energy, Squadron Energy faced significant
operational challenges that hindered its ability to scale and evolve. Following recent structural
changes, including increased autonomy and strategic acquisitions, the business was left with
fragmented systems and inconsistent processes across departments.
With 80+ separate instances of Xero alone, Squadron Energy’s technology landscape was
inefficient, unscalable, and prone to duplication. 80+ instances meant 80 times the effort with
finance administration and controls. Adapting for new projects or services was constrained by
limited flexibility and a lack of integration.
The organisation’s internal processes were also slowing progress, burdened by low-value, high-
effort tasks with an over reliance of Finance to create Purchase Orders.
Manual workarounds, extensive spreadsheet use, and data silos further compounded
inefficiencies, impeding real-time decision-making and obstructing progress toward the
organisation’s strategic sustainability goals.
To meet their renewable energy goal by 2030, Squadron Energy recognised it had just six years
to establish a significant pipeline of wind, solar, and storage projects. This created urgent time
pressure to establish modern, enterprise-level systems and enable rapid scaling.

Solution
To support its rapid growth and long-term renewable energy targets, Squadron Energy
partnered with Deloitte to implement a scalable, cloud-based ERP platform that could
be delivered in under four months. Following SAP Activate methodology and leveraging
Deloitte's StartSuccess accelerators, the team deployed SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud, SAP
BTP, SAP Concur and Blackline Account Reconciliation, covering core business areas
including finance, procurement, group reporting, central invoice management, and
expense management.
Squadron have implemented over 95 legal entities and onboarded more than 300 users,
all while maintaining a clean core and leveraging out-of-the-box functionality to
accelerate delivery. With embedded innovation built on BTP for reducing time spent on
finance requests in areas of opportunity, automating notifications and recipient created
tax-invoices.
With a solid system in place, the focus has shifted to continuous improvement including a
recent Blackline automation for reconciliation, ensuring the platform grows with the
business and supports smarter, faster decision-making across the organisation.
Deloitte continues to work closely with Squadron Energy to support day-to-day
operations and long-term system performance. The team remains focused on identifying
opportunities to drive efficiency and value through ongoing optimisation and exploring
how the latest SAP technologies and Business AI capabilities can be applied.
