With a focus on safe and consistent production, GM3 will leverage strong operational performance to enable long-term future opportunityfrom its metallurgical coal assets.A recent carve-out business from a global Australian mining company, GM³ also known as Illawarra Metallurgical Coal is renowned for producing high-quality metallurgical coal, acritical component in steel production. Operations for GM³ include two underground coal mines - Appin Mine and Dendrobium Mine in NSW. The company is also part owner ofthe Port Kembla Coal Terminal and manages the port on behalf of a consortium of partners. In a strategic move to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness, GM³ embarked on a transformative journey by transitioning from SAP ECC to S/4HANA. This transitionwas aimed at capitalizing on the separation/carveout to uplift and streamline existing processes across various business units, including Finance, Supply Chain, AssetManagement, Warehouse, and Operations. The new operating model at GM³ is designed to drive operational effectiveness, focusing on a streamlined, scalable transformation of its end-to-end processes. To achieve this,GM³ has partnered with PwC Australia for system implementation services, leveraging SAP Best Practice solutions to enable a successful S/4HANA transformation within anambitious timeframe of under 8 months.Category : SAP ERP Fast Growth
ChallengesA key business challenge facing GM³ was the necessity to implement the project within a constrained timeline, requiringcompletion in under eight months. This urgency was compounded by significant process and structural changes as GM³separation from a large global mining organization, This involved scaling down resources and reallocating them to support andreplace previously centralized processes in production planning, data, procurement, and finance areas. This highlightedconcerns about scalability limitations and necessitated a design that could accommodate increased transaction volumes asGM³ operations expanded. In addition, managing the extensive external system landscape posed a significant challenge. Previously, GM³ operated withvarious SAP and non-SAP systems that suffered from poor integration, resulting in inefficient manual processes and difficultiesin maintaining data accuracy and consistency.Lastly, employee productivity and engagement were major pain points with the previous system. There was a strong aspirationto replace outdated or difficult-to-use systems with a modern ERP solution that offers a user-friendly interface and intuitiveexperience, thereby improving employee satisfaction and performance.Appin MineReference: GM³ photography from https://gm3.au/
SolutionThe implementation of SAP for GM³ was guided by a well-defined strategy that focused on both data migration using theSNP tool and a greenfield design approach. This strategy was crucial in outlining the project scope and establishing arealistic timeline that aligned with GM3's business objectives.Key differentiators of SAP include its configurable capabilities, which allow for customization to GM3's unique processes. This adaptability enhances the standard solutions and significantly uplifts user satisfaction. GM³ successfully integratedthe core S/4HANA ERP system with several external systems, both within and outside the SAP landscape, includingConvergent IS (BTP), Ariba, Concur, and SuccessFactors.A major highlight of this project was the achievement of business objectives that motivated the implementation. Theseobjectives were centered around improved efficiency, particularly in the Supply and Finance sectors, enhanced reportingcapabilities, better decision-making, and increased scalability to meet future business requirements as GM³ evolves andgrows. This strategic approach not only ensured a smooth transition but also positioned GM³ to leverage its technologicalinvestments for long-term success.ProjectsReference: GM³ photography from https://gm3.au/
