With a workforce of more than 9,300people, the organisation plays a critical role in maintaining infrastructure and enabling the energy transition. To modernise its core systems and support future growth, Energy Queensland migrated to SAP S/4HANA via RISE with SAP. Thetransformation enhanced security, simplified operations, and enabled new levels of integration and insight through SAP BTP, AnalyticsCloud, Fiori and Integration Suite. With nine core systems modernised and Geographical Information System (GIS) performancesignificantly improved, Energy Queensland has built a scalable, stable ERP foundation to power its next decade of transformation.A clean start: Energy Queensland’s ERPtransformation with SAPIntelligent ERP
ChallengesEnergy Queensland saw an opportunity to improve how its systems supported the scale and complexity of itsoperations while ensuring it had a platform fit for the future. There was a growing need to scale and re-configure large parts of its existing SAP S/4HANA technical landscape. This was driven by ongoing growth and expansion of core business systems. Cybersecurity was another key driver.Expectations around infrastructure protection had shifted significantly since Energy Queensland commenced itsdigital transformation, and the business needed stronger foundations to support future regulatory and businessdemands.Complexity of Energy Queensland’s digital landscape with SAP and non-SAP systems needing to co-exist tosupport end to end business processes needed a re-think for how to integrate these systems. A key focus was GIS(Geographic Information System), used by more than 3,000 field workers to access network data and coordinatework across Queensland. Improving its speed, mobility and reliability would directly support safety, efficiency andresponsiveness in the field.Rather than continue with small fixes, Energy Queensland chose to take a broader step forward simplifying itscore systems, removing barriers to change, and creating a platform that could securely support the way peopleneed to work today and tomorrow.
SolutionEnergy Queensland set out to simplify how its core systems worked, make them easier to support, and ensure they weresecure and reliable. The move to SAP S/4HANA via RISE with SAP gave the business a clean, modern platform with roomto grow.Nine major applications were upgraded. Systems that had become difficult to maintain were brought back into support. Theimplementation followed SAP’s clean core approach to ensure Energy Queensland continued to keep things simple andsustainable.A key feature of the project was the uplift of GIS. This involved a first-of-its-kind deployment running ESRI’s ArcGIS on SAPHANA as the geo-spatial database connected via a secure AWS connection. The result was faster, more consistentperformance for field crews who depend on reliable access to geospatial data. The broader solution included integration with a much larger eco-system of SAP and non-SAP application including:- SAP BTP for system integration and future innovation- SAP Analytics Cloud to support timely, accurate reporting- SAP Fiori, Build Workzone and Mobile Start to create a more consistent user experience- SAP SuccessFactors, Concur, Ariba, Fieldglass, Employee Central Payroll, Workforce Software and OpenText ContentManagement.Together, these tools formed a stable, future-ready platform. The new system is easier to run, better connected acrossteams, and ready to support new services as the business continues to evolve.
Impact80% reduction in ERPmaintenance effortFaster, more reliable GIS for3,000+ field workers$10M+ saved in support andsystem costsThe transformation delivered clear and lasting benefits across Energy Queensland’s operations, workforce, and systems.By simplifying its core and upgrading key applications, the business realised more than $10 million in savings. These camefrom reduced hosting and licensing fees, the retirement of custom builds, and lower support costs. ERP maintenance effortdropped by over 80 percent, allowing internal teams to focus on service improvements and strategic delivery.Performance gains were felt most directly by field teams. With GIS now running faster and more reliably, crews can access theinformation they need with less delay improving safety, speed, and response.Across the business, teams now benefit from:- Cleaner data and more consistent processes- Faster, more accurate reporting- Reduced risk and stronger resilience during peak periodsThese outcomes support better day-to-day decision-making, while also easing pressure during high-demand events like majorstorms.Just as importantly, the business now has a system it can build on. The new ERP core provides a strong, stable base for futureupgrades, automation, and smarter tools helping Energy Queensland move forward with confidence, on its own terms.
