BHP, one of the world’s leading natural resources companies, brings people and resources together to build a better world. We produce essential commodities through our assets including
iron ore, metallurgical coal, copper and nickel, and are expanding our operations into potash.
BHP previously operated a traditional shared-services model, with separate functional shared services teams executing basic transactional processes to
reduce cost through labour arbitrage. As a result, value chain processes were often not interconnected to enable prioritised outcomes for its frontline Asset operations.
BHP decided to transform its shared services model into a single Global Business Services (GBS) operating model to shift focus from efficiency to delivering operational effectiveness with
seamless, at scale transformation of its end-to-end processes. BHP engaged PwC Australia in a business consulting partnership, and leveraged SAP Signavio solutions, to enable their global
transformation to deliver sustained outcomes for more than 80,000 BHP employees and contractors globally. BHP and PwC's end-to-end process transformation capabilities together is
known as 'GBS Service Transformation (GBS ST)'.
BHP and PwC together, have a philosophy of shared goals and outcomes, with a combination of BHP’s operating system, together with PwC's proprietary assets, and global outside-in
perspective, the GBS ST team are equipped with future-facing skills to scale transformational process change across BHP. GBS ST partnered with SAP Signavio solutions to help accelerate
their transformation, allowing BHP to understand current state, baseline future state and provide the process intelligence to realise value at pace.

Challenges
In the past, every process at BHP, from producing financial accounts to managing the supply chain process for operations,
had been carried out by separate functionally-led shared services teams. Lack of visibility on end-to-end process and
interface complexity was ultimately creating inefficiencies and waste, leading to frustration in BHP’s front line Asset
operations.
Maximising the effectiveness of connectivity across these end-to-end processes represented a significant transformation of
BHP’s operating model, aggregating process activities from finance, human resources, maintenance, inventory and
procurement, to marketing, sales and maritime operations.
The PwC / BHP partnership enabled BHP to drive their end-to-end process transformation approach. SAP Signavio solutions,
became an underpinning foundation for visualsing processes to break down silos, identify waste and developing automation
opportunities to drive operational efficiency and effectiveness.

Solution
SAP Signavio solutions brought the capability to understand and transform our (end-to-end) business processes, at speed, and at
scale. Other tools on the market either brought focused areas on BPM, or Process Mining (Process Intelligence), but not together, in
a seamless, integrated way.
Adopting and leveraging SAP Signavio solutions capabilities has become core to BHP’s GBS continuous improvement. GBS ST
leveraged SAP Signavio to be the digital backbone to connect Process, People, Experience and Technology, for process
transformation and digitisation.
SAP Signavio solutions provided end-to-end Process Modelling (Baselining) capability for GBS ST; modelling core processes and
establish a common language of process taxonomy across BHP. The process models supported visibility of process architecture, risks,
controls, SLAs, stakeholders, accountabilities, and more. SAP Signavio Collaboration Hub provided ease of sharing, review and
collaboration.
In addition to baselining the end-to-end processes using SAP Signavio Process Manager, GBS sought to understand the customer
experience, and felt pain points by modelling and establishing the voice of the customer using SAP Signavio Journey Modeler. The
end-to-end processes were then diagnosed and analysed (from both top-down, and bottom-up) to uncover improvement
opportunities. Process Intelligence was used to investigate, and uncover hidden value, and efficiency gains within the processes. In
particular, utilising SAP Signavio Process Intelligence to understand, potential bottlenecks, rework, and impacts of deviation from the
process as-designed (modelled), compared to as-executed within core ERP systems.
SAP Signavio solutions enabled visibility of all end-to-end processes within and outside of GBS, and enabled alignment with the
Business on the right metrics to drive end-to-end operational efficiency and effectiveness; transformation initiatives were able to be
identified and prioritised for delivery with cross-functional teams.
Through this approach and leveraging SAP Signavio solutions, GBS increased its agility to quickly and effectively respond to changes
in the market, customer needs, and internal operations. SAP Signavio enabled GBS to accelerate value identification and scale
improvement at pace.
