Replacing aging banking processes with real-time control
When a bank helps fuel national growth, every internal process matters. For Banco de Fomento Angola S.A. (BFA), one of Angola’s largest private banks, that pressure intensified after a landmark IPO that drew demand more than five times the shares available.
The bank was ready to grow, deepen financial inclusion, and reach more corporate, small and midsize, retail, rural, and underserved customers. But in banking, growth depends on trust, transparency, and meeting regulatory requirements accurately and on time. Behind that ambition, teams were working with aging systems for accounting, procurement, asset management, HR, and planning. Manual spreadsheets and disconnected processes made supplier payments slower, financial closing more difficult, asset depreciation more time-consuming, and regulatory reporting more complex.
For customers and communities, the risk was bigger than back-office inefficiencies. Fragmented data can slow decisions, increase compliance pressure, and make it harder for the bank to expand services where access to finance is still developing. BFA needed a modern digital core to help connect operations, strengthen controls, and support regulatory reporting. Achieving this would help employees spend less time reconciling data and more time serving customers.

Connecting banking operations around trusted data
BFA turned to SAP solutions as the foundation for a business transformation, not a technology replacement, implementing SAP Cloud ERP Private solutions to replace its third-party legacy system. It used SAP Integration Suite to connect with its core banking platform for faster financial operations and SAP SuccessFactors solutions to help modernize employee lifecycle processes. Meanwhile, the SAP Analytics Cloud solution provided advanced analytics and planning capabilities to strengthen budgeting, funding, and business planning.
Following SAP Activate methodology and a clean core approach, BFA adopted standard SAP software processes where possible while meeting local regulatory needs.
This connected landscape helped BFA move from fragmented processing to real-time integration across finance and procurement. The bank automated supplier payments, including international transfers, giving the finance team better visibility into liabilities, assets, and procurement data. HR gained structured performance, payroll, and self-service capabilities. And planning teams benefit from trusted data for five-year business planning, helping BFA make faster choices about where to invest, expand, and serve.
PwC Angola supported BFA as transformation partner, bringing banking-sector process expertise, SAP software consulting capability, change management and integration support, and delivery experience backed by PwC Portugal consultants.

Accelerating customer impact through cleaner operations
BFA’s transformation delivered measurable gains where it needed them most. The bank digitalized more than 90 processes, over half of which were previously handled through emails and spreadsheets, giving teams more control and scalability. Supplier payments that used to take a full day to process now take only about five minutes from payment release to vendor account credit, helping keep critical services and vendor relationships moving.
The first financial accounting closing after go-live took only eight days, giving leaders faster insights to guide growth. Asset depreciation across more than 150,000 bank assets now takes under 10 minutes instead of more than four hours, reducing manual accounting effort. The bank launched more than 1,000 invoices in the first 10 days after go-live, showing rapid adoption at scale.
Better data quality also supported a PwC-developed, AI-enabled reconciliation tool that helped reduce supplier credit and debt exposure by more than 90% in the first three months.
For customers, these operational gains mean a more resilient bank, faster decisions, stronger controls, and a better foundation for expanding access to financial services across Angola.

Extending digital banking operations for growth
BFA now plans to build on its SAP software foundation by expanding adoption across additional group entities and further standardizing intercompany processes. This will support its goals to extend financial inclusion and help more customers and communities participate in Angola’s economy with resilience, transparency, and speed.
