Frequently asked questions

Integration platform as a service (iPaaS) delivers a cloud service for application, data, process, and service-oriented architecture (SOA) integration scenarios. It's a multitenant platform that supports cloud-to-cloud, cloud-to-on-premises, on-premises-to-on-premises, and B2B integration. It supports real-time integration and scales to meet the high-volume demands of mobile; extract, transform, and load (ETL); and electronic data interchange (EDI) environments.

An enterprise integration platform as a service (EiPaaS) is a suite of cloud services that addresses a variety of scenarios, including application and data integration, as well as some combination of process, ecosystems, mobile, AI-enabled systems, IoT integration, API management, and digital integration hub capabilities.

Integration as a service (IaaS) is an instant computing infrastructure provisioned and managed over the Internet.

Messaging is a way for different components in a distributed application architecture to communicate. Components can send and receive messages across different languages, compilers, and operating systems, as long as each side of the communication understands the common messaging format and protocol.

Application connectors are architectural elements that model the rules for how components interact. They are standard class connections customised for certain APIs, so they can be used to quickly integrate new end points.

SAP connectors allow the integration of different applications and technologies with SAP systems through open standards. The connectors are means for technical interoperability of SAP components (written in ABAP or ABAP objects) and other components (written in Java, C++, and Visual Basic, for example).

Data streams provide a constant flow of information that applications can add to or consume from, independent of the transmission of that data. For instance, SAP HANA, streaming analytics option, is a specialised option that processes streams of incoming event data in real time and collects and acts on this information. Smart data streaming is ideally suited for situations where data arrives as events happen and where there is value in collecting, understanding, and acting on this data right away.

Some examples of data sources that produce streams of events in real time include:

  • Sensors

  • Smart devices

  • Web sites (click streams)

  • IT systems (logs)

  • Financial markets (prices)

  • Social media

Data flows into streaming projects from various sources, typically through adapters, which connect the sources to the smart data streaming server. The streaming projects contain business logic, which they apply to the incoming data, typically in the form of continuous queries and rules. These streaming projects are entirely event-driven, turning the raw input streams into one or more derived streams that can be captured in the SAP HANA database, sent as alerts, posted to downstream applications, or streamed to live dashboards.

EIPs are collections of technology-independent solutions to common integration problems. Patterns also provide a common language for developers and application architects to describe integrations.

An API is a set of tools, definitions, and protocols for building application software. It lets your product or service communicate with other products and services without having to know how they’re implemented.
