Adani: Increasing productivity and visibility with centralised master data management
Explore Adani’s journey with SAP
Looking to diversify during a rapid growth phase, Adani set out to build a foundation for centralised data management across its business. The conglomerate found what it needed in the SAP Master Data Governance application on SAP S/4HANA ‒ increasing productivity, data quality, and transparency across its 11 key businesses and nine ERP systems.

The Challenge
Supporting regular data validation and enrichment across nine ERPs
With businesses spanning renewable and thermal energy generation, ports and logistics infrastructure, and airport operations, Adani Group (Adani) improves the lives of many Indians every day. The conglomerate is India’s largest port operator and one of the world’s largest renewable energy companies.
Adani decided to modernize its technology infrastructure and give each business its own dedicated ERP platform. However, this effort resulted in an incompatible environment for enterprise-wide master data governance.
With its “OneData” project, Adani sought to overcome this challenge by establishing a centralised master data governance framework. This project focused on the retirement of existing master data authoring tools, integration of active and passive data governance, and creation of a single source of master data.
The Solution
Harmonising and enriching master data
Adani Group carved out its single ERP system into nine instances of the SAP ERP application running on SAP HANA. Adani embarked on its “OneData” project to support this decentralisation while continuing to reap the benefits of unified master data and enabling economies of scale and consistent business processes. It also wanted to improve the quality of existing master data.
With help from SAP partner IBM, Adani implemented the SAP Master Data Governance application on SAP S/4HANA in a hub-and-spoke model, connecting the master data governance system to its nine ERP instances. It also deployed SAP Data Services and SAP Information Steward software for regular data validation and enrichment. The master data supported by the software spans financial, vendor, service, customer, and material data objects.
The Result
Enabling common master data governance practices and processes group-wide
Equipped with a digital landscape that includes SAP Master Data Governance on SAP S/4HANA, SAP Data Services, and SAP Information Steward, Adani has a single source of truth based on high-quality master data. This outcome gives employees the visibility and insights they need to make in-the-moment decisions confidently and supports better-quality data with regular data validation, consistent data definition, and internal quality checks.
Adani’s data governance processes are more efficient as well, thanks to a standardised structure with defined data owners and distribution of master data to multiple downstream systems. In addition, the overall user experience is enhanced with workflow-based approvals and the ability to scale SAP and third-party data and systems.
Future Plans
Extending the value of master data with process automation
As an extension to this project, the master data management team is now automating the process for plant maintenance master data, such as functional locations, bills of material, and task lists.
To support these efforts, Adani is evaluating SAP Master Data Governance, enterprise asset management extension by Utopia and the SAP Asset Information Workbench application by Utopia.
