Amber's Story

At SAP, we believe that when you bring everything you are, you can become everything you want.

My strategy is work life integration versus balance. I do not mind spending lots of my time helping SAP achieve its goals, and SAP has shown more than enough flexibility to make sure I can handle the things I need to outside of SAP.

Amber Van Sant

Amber Van Sant is an Incident Response Manager based at the new Cyber Fusion Centre, Newtown Square, Philadelphia.

"I am originally from a small town in Pennsylvania called Tyrone. The first time I left Pennsylvania was when I went to FBI new agent training in Quantico, Virginia for 21 weeks. From there, I relocated to a job in New York City for the next several years. Since then, I have been back in the Greater Philadelphia area and I now work out of the SAP Newtown Square office.

I first heard about SAP while attending Penn State University. It was recommended by one of my Professors as a great place to work. Taking his advice, I took an internship in the Newtown Square Office from 2006-2007. The great culture and wonderful folks that I worked with left a lasting impression and I decided to come back after time in the FBI and the cybersecurity industry more broadly.

I manage SAP’s Eastern United States incident response team. Our cyber security team follows the sun, so when its daytime in Pennsylvania, my team monitors and protects SAP’s global environment. Being a manager means collaborating with the members of my team to continuously improve our internal operations in addition to collaborating with the other security teams across the globe to ensure we have a coordinated approach. Collectively our security organization monitors for strange activity in SAP’s environment. When we detect strange activity, we take decisive action to protect SAP’s information systems, reputation, and bottom line.

SAP cannot help our clients unless they trust our people, operations, and information systems. My role ensures that our clients can trust us by making sure we operate in a secure manner, and if there are problems, we address them quickly and professionally.

The most important thing for me is to have the opportunity to do meaningful work. I am not interested in ‘checking the box’, doing things the way they have always been done, or simply cruising along and collecting a salary - I really need to feel like I am making a difference in the world. When I spoke with Imran Islam during the hiring process, I learned about the leadership team’s plans to drive security outcomes through innovation, high-quality work, and greater internal investment. I had read up on the work Imran had done with Cisco earlier in his career, I heard his vision for SAP, and I knew I had to be a part of it. Since my first day at SAP Imran has steadily increased my responsibility while providing coaching and guidance. I expect my professional network within SAP to broaden with time, and I am sure there will be many others who will help me along the way.

Outside of work, I enjoy learning, exercising, and spending time with my family. My strategy is work life integration versus balance. I do not mind spending lots of my time helping SAP achieve its goals, and SAP has shown more than enough flexibility to make sure I can handle the things I need to outside of SAP: learning, exercising and spending time with my family.

We spend nearly half our lives at work, so I would say to anyone looking for a new opportunity, always start by asking yourself, regardless of the company, what you are trying to get out of it. After you have a list together check to see if innovation, impact, and an honest day’s work are at the top of your list. If they are, apply to SAP. In fact, if you are in security, feel free to reach out to me directly!
