Royal Mail Group
Royal Mail Group enterprise system strategic decision support
At the end of 1999 Royal Mail Group initiated the Enterprise
System Programme (ESP) to bring together all finance and HR
systems into a single common platform of operation. The vision
of the ESP is to manage Royal Mail Group from a single
enterprise-wide system, accessible to all, using the latest
web-based technology, which exceeds all current demands and
provides flexibility for the future.
Royal Mail Group selected SAP.com as the ideal solution
for ESP because it offered a single instance of R/3 ERP and
would ensure that all finance related systems would be Euro
compliant before 2002. Deloitte Consulting was selected because
of its ability to provide a team of consultants able to form a
joint project team with Royal Mail Group.
The strategic objectives of the project are:
- To deploy innovative solutions in support of a holistic
approach to strategic enterprise management which are
consistent with Royal Mail Groups data management
principles
- To provide senior decision makers with the information,
policies, processes and know how to make better informed,
faster and more commercially minded decisions which add value
to Royal Mail Group
- To deliver the required statutory financial information
and much of the financial information demanded by
Postcomm
- To provide a central repository of tactical and strategic
data which is widely accessible and enables uniform but
flexible decisions.
The SEM project started in April 2001 and is being carried
out by a team of around 30 project team members (15 from
Deloitte Consulting) with the balance from the client located
in London.
The Activity Based Cost Management strand is concerned with
implementing a series of strategic and tactical ABC models
utilising SEM-BPS functionality along with the bridge to ABC
Technologies Oros ABC tool.
The Business Planning and Simulation (SEM-BPS) strand is
concerned with developing an integrated planning solution to
enable rapid submission and consolidation of business unit
plans.
The Business Consolidation (SEM-BCS) strands aim is to
develop a solution for legal and management consolidation.
Through integration with SEM-BPS the consolidated budget and
five year rolling forecast will also be produced.
The Business Warehouse (BW) strand is concerned with
delivering the data mart to support the SEM applications and
provide an analytical reporting engine for the R/3 users.
The major benefit of the project is improved organisational
decision making, particularly in the use of planning, costing
and revenue information. This includes the ability to manage
regulatory compliance and provide improved performance. The
data will be available to all decision makers, will be highly
transparent and of consistent quality.
The project will enable the centralisation and
standardisation of business standards across business units
leading to operating cost reductions and upper quartile
performance. System decommissioning savings will also be
substantial
