As a progressive Multi National ICT company SAP Africa believes that part of doing business in South Africa means ploughing back into society in which we operate. SAP is continuingly initiating and getting involved in new good corporate citizenship initiatives.
The SAP Corporate Social Investment program was developed in conjunction with the Government's call to corporates to assist with the eradication of poverty, growing the economy and empowering individuals.
Through the CSI initiatives of SAP, the company contributes to growing the economy in order to support the Government's initiative to include more people in participating in the formal economy .
CORPORATE SOCIAL INVESTMENT:
NELSON MANDELA FOUNDATION
SAP South Africa is a sponsor of the Nelson Mandela Foundation's dialogue for justice programme of which the Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture is a flag ship event. The lecture was inaugurated on Dr Mandela's 85th birthday on 19 July 2003 and past speakers have included Former President of the United States: Bill Clinton, retired Archbishop: Desmond Tutu, Professor Wangari Maathai, President Mbeki, and former secretary-general of the United Nations Mr Kofi Annan in 2007.
The lecture targets a wide ranging audience that covers: Senior level members of government, Captains of industry The labour movement International/> multilateral and bilateral organisations Higher education institutions, Cultural and sporting organisations and Representatives of foreign governments.
CIDA (COMMUNITY & INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION)
The C.I.D.A. city campus, is a unique free university in Johannesburg, catering for the historically disadvantaged population groups. An ICT Academy was launched at CIDA in Feb 2003 and the aim of this project is to provide a three-year curriculum,
The first year consisting of a foundation in ICT training. Students will then choose from three streams of specialization, programming (Unix, Java), enterprise resource planning (SAP) and networking (Cisco).
SAP has made available SAP user certification to those students that who are following the ERP stream in the ICT academy. The Programme has been running for the last three years and currently has 30 students in the SAP stream All graduates of the programme have been employed in the SAP Ecosystem
GRADUATE RECRUITMENT PROGRAMME
SAP's graduate recruitment programme was launched in January 2002 both to ensure an efficient mechanism for ICT skills transfer and a more representative workforce for SAP Africa's South African operation.
An average of 200 Previously Disadvantaged Individuals (PDI) graduates are interviewed from universities during the graduate recruitment process of which ten to fifteen are employed.
These graduates are employed as Graduate Consultants and follow a six month structured program consisting of hard and soft skills training as well as experiential training on project sites under the guidance of a mentor.
At the end of the six-month programme graduates are assessed and those that have met their objectives and the stated requirements are promoted to Trainee Consultants.
The graduate recruitment programme – aimed at recruiting historically disadvantaged graduates for SAP's consulting practice – has created 64 new jobs, so broadening access to income and ICT wealth.
TELKOM CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE
SAP and Telkom launched a Centre of Excellence at the University of Johannesburg in February 2005 through the contribution of funds and research objectives to support research into management issues confronting telecommunications operators and service providers operating in an African context.
The Centre offers post-graduate students the opportunity to focus on the management side of telecommunications - devising more effective models for Operating System Support (OSS) and Business System Support (BSS).
The Centre is funded by SAP Telkom and the Department of Trade and Industry's technology and human resources for industry programme (Thrip). SAP's involvement will stretch over five years.
SIYAFUNDA COMMUNITY TECHNOLOGY CENTRE (CTC)
Siyafunda CTC intends to give birth to the dream of the Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Duma Nkosi by taking ICT to the community, and harnessing the passion of community-based leaders to provide the management and operational skills, in uplifting communities.
The initiative envisages:
- Making a reality the stated goal of the State President to make ICT Access (Internet & Email) affordable to communities
- Skilling the youth, thereby making them employable and alleviating unemployment by networking with recruitment agencies and businesses in the Metro, thus becoming an enabler for job creation.
The mission of the Siyafunda CTC is to:
- Empower communities by providing easy access to ICT Centres
- Educate communities by providing affordable learning ICT Centres
- Econnect communities by providing affordable access to Internet, Email
The Siyafunda CTC Model Address Affordable Learning to provide affordable ICT accredited courses and training. This will entail partnering with an ISETT accredited training centre. Revenue generated from these training facilities will fund the maintenance and running of the Centre.
The Centre will be available for the convenience of the community, i.e. in the evenings, on weekends and school holidays for learners. Palm Ridge is a pilot site with a further 9 other sites having being identified. In addition to sponsoring the pilot centre SAP sits on the board of directors and will act as an advisor to the further roll-out.
UNIVERSITY ALLIANCE PROGRAMME
The Tertiary Education programme is a global programme with a membership of over 500 universities which was started in Germany in the mid 80s. Today there are 180 members and it is the second largest programme in the U.S with 110 school.
There are over 100,000 students with access to SAP software annually. 16 University Competency Centers (UCC) host the schools. The programme also helps to lower our customers' TCO. Results US:- 85 to 90% of grads had jobs before they graduated
- Higher salaries upon graduation.
The programme was launched by SAP South Africa on 9 October 2007. The Minister of Education, Ms Naledi Pandor was the guest speaker and she commended SAP for the initiative and pledged her support.
SAP RESEARCH
On 28th June 2005 SAP launched a research group in Pretoria – its first on the African continent. It became one of the few multinationals operating on the continent to establish a South African research capacity and to invest in the development of local research skills.
It is also one of the few to focus such skills on South African conditions in terms of using information and communications technology (ICT) to enable socio-economic development. Thereafter it packages the understanding and experience achieved in such a way that other developing societies can benefit from it.
CORPORATE CITIZENSHIP
WALK THE WORLD WALKATHON
On May 13, 100 SAP South Africa employees and their families participated in a global walkathon involving other colleagues in Europe Middle East Africa to support the United Nations "World Food Programme(WFP)" in the fight against hunger. SAP proudly handed over a check for 150 000 Euros to the world food programme at the end.
FIRST LEGO LEAGUE (FLL)
FLL is an international robotics team competition for children aged 10 to 16 with a new challenge every year:
Mission: FLL encourages children to explore science and technology to stimulate their own creativity to build team-working skills.
Global employee volunteering initiative: Opportunity for employees to engage with their communities.
Local participation with SAP staff: Two employees support one team as coaches SAP pays for equipment and participation.
Currently: 85 teams in 19 subsidiaries participating (170 employees and 700 kids involved) SA entered one team in 2006 and has entered 9 teams in 2007.
In 2007 SAP South Africa entered 9 teams, four of which are from Soweto and Springs - two predominantly disadvantaged areas in South Africa.
ORLANDO CHILDRENS HOME, SOWETO
When SAP South Africa staff embarked on the "Walk the World" Initiative driven by the World Food Programme earlier this year, staff members decided to take along some 30 orphans from the Orlando Children's home in Soweto.
This gave staff members an opportunity to understand the challenges faced by the orphanage. Subsequent to Walk the World, two staff members: Janice Mcfadyen and Aminah Khoza have mentored and coached a team of the orphans to participate in the First Lego League 2008 competition.
In addition SAP has been invited to take up a position on the Governing Board of the Orphanage so that we can bring our management and governance experience to bear within the environment of the Olrando home.
