SGI AND SAP

SGI brings to SAP customers worldwide the benefits of its award winning shared memory platform SGI UV. The SGI UV architecture was developed to use industry standard technology. SAP applications are certified, supported, and available on the SGI UV server platform for Novell SLES 11 SP1. The certification means that SAP customers can leverage the same scalable, high-throughput with SGI servers already adopted by many of the world's leading automakers, pharmaceutical companies, and manufacturers.

Alliance Overview

How would life in the enterprise improve if the technology was available to seamlessly and dynamically extend your underlying hardware platform to precisely meet the rigorous demands of today's flexible, service-oriented enterprise? Well, that day is here. The Linux based SGI UV server family enables the exact match of SAP software and SAP Business Suite applications with commodity hardware components and open-source operating systems. This unique combination provides just-in-time information delivery, simple system administration, enterprise-class maintenance, unparalleled price performance, and a total cost of ownership (TCO) that makes for an outstanding and lasting value.

Key Customer Benefits

Using UV driving Linux enterprise infrastructures, you can more easily and affordably consolidate your resources to reduce ownership costs. This is a proven, scalable, and cost-efficient platform for deploying SAP solutions on Linux.

  • Faster time to decision, time to solution, and time to competitive advantage
  • 10 to 100 times better decision support at a lower TCO and lower risk
  • Scalability to deliver real-time business intelligence to everyone in your organization who can benefit from it
  • Computer systems and infrastructure based on dedicated CPU, memory, and I/O blades for scalability in all dimensions and the flexibility for any change

Capabilities and Industry Expertise

The SGI UV family of flexible, service-oriented, Linux-based servers has been developed from a long history of high-performance database and computing technologies. These highly flexible systems can be configured as a single system image using one Linux operating system or multiple partitions using multiple Linux operating systems.

The SGI NUMAlink architecture enables seamless connection for single image systems and rapid reconfiguration for high-growth or volatile environments that require flexible redeployment of resources. Multiple node clusters are also available for high availability, scalability, and disaster recovery requirements. This pay-as-you-grow architecture provides a lower entry cost and a longer deployment of resources, creating an infrastructure with lower costs over longer periods of time than other conventional server platforms.

With the large amounts of directly addressable memory on UV, more of the database can be loaded into memory at any given time. For memory-resident database deployments, the entire database can be put into memory with full persistence and recoverability. This translates to very high-performance solutions that meet the instant response requirement of many applications.

Testimonials

"SGI, SAP and Intel are changing the dynamics of mission critical computing. By combining SGI's high-performance UV systems with the power of the Intel Xeon processor, large scale-up x86 computing is now a reality for SAP users looking for alternatives from the costly and proprietary RISC/mainframe architectures for their SAP enterprise solutions."
Pauline Nist, General Manager of Mission Critical Computing, Intel Corporation

"Linux is now a viewed as new progressive choice for enterprise customers and SAP users, which presents a huge opportunity for companies that can meet the performance criteria of the largest organizations with scalable, Linux OS-based systems. Without question, solutions like SGI … have the reliability and flexibility that make Linux not only a desirable component of the SAP environment, but an essential one as well. The time is right to give SAP customers a superior choice for optimal performance by allowing them to adopt SGI's powerful and scalable open-standard platform."
