Dow's diversified industry-leading portfolio of specialty chemical, advanced materials, agro sciences and plastics businesses delivers a broad range of technology-based products and solutions to their customers.
Customer Snapshot: Success Strategy
In developing solutions based on science and technology, Dow embraces Responsible Care®, a voluntary industry-wide commitment to safely handle chemicals from inception in the lab to ultimate disposal. This global commitment helps consumers lead better lives, customers succeed, stockholders prosper, employees achieve, and communities thrive.
Finding a Way to Grow
Since Dow’s strategy is based on transformational growth, the need for consolidation and integration is critical. Dow had been running their business on older SAP business software. It worked well, and was a solid solution, but it could no longer support Dow’s ambitious strategy for creating new markets, new solutions, and increased value.
We are now entering a period of increasing financial flexibility after successfully integrating the largest acquisition in our history.
Needing to integrate performance figures, Dow selected the SAP Business Planning and Consolidation application. It meshed well with their current SAP system, and helped Dow quickly integrate their recent acquisitions – by providing sophisticated IT tools for financial consolidation and management reporting.
There were only a few people who had access to consolidations for the entire company. That was a huge issue.
Enter SAP: The SAP Experience
Given the size of Dow, with over 800 active legal entities, consolidating financials was a significant event.
We were extremely pleased with our experience. The consultants were very knowledgeable and receptive to any comments or suggestions we had.
Dow is already more nimble. They recently used the SAP Business Planning and Consolidation template for a rollout at a company they divested but to which they still provide accounting support. They were very impressed that they could leverage what they had done for Dow and implement it at a totally separate company so quickly.
Better Business: Benefits
From both a business and IT viewpoint, integration is a major advantage in terms of reduced support requirements and total cost of ownership.
Better Business: Lessons Learned
Dow has now disseminated the software to executives and business users to enable faster information access and adhoc reporting – with appropriate security and controls. Reporting is the biggest feature that stands out. Now, end users can adjust standard reports or create the adhoc reports they need.
Better Business: Run Simple
Now armed with SAP Business Planning and Consolidation, Dow intends to pursue all of the benefits available through an integrated platform.
We realized some quick benefits up front; two years down the road, we’re really going to see a transformation when we have a fully integrated solution.
Dow now has a flexible solution that will enable them to do a monthly close versus current quarterly procedure. They are better aligned with SAP’s product strategy and road map, and believe they have only begun to reap the benefits. And in the near future, Dow intends to introduce the planning functionality.
