Accenture and SAP

A New Approach in Supply Chain Management for the Steel Industry

What happens when Accenture and SAP work together on an integrated supply chain management approach?

Accenture's strong position in the implementation of IT solutions in the steel industry, paired with SAP's long experience and strong footprint in the steel market, has resulted in the development of new functionality in the SAP Supply Chain Management (SAP SCM) application, driven by requirements of the steel industry. The impact of tremendous growth in China, along with transportation, supply-chain visibility, and rapidly changing business needs, are among the challenges that IT and business experts in the steel industry currently face.

Enhancements in SAP SCM support changing business needs in the steel industry – from an efficiency-driven approach to a customer-value approach. The enhanced application has expanded mid- and long-term planning functionality and has improved the sales-order process. These changes will ensure an integrated planning approach across large company landscapes. Availability of the new SAP SCM functionality is planned for the next release in August 2007.

Supply Chain Performance in the Global Primary Metals and Steel Industry Event

The SAP SCM enhancements were introduced to the public on January 16 and 17, 2007, in Heidelberg, Germany, during the Supply Chain Performance in the Global Primary Metals and Steel Industry event, hosted jointly by SAP and Accenture.

With more than 80 participants from 14 countries worldwide, including key players ThyssenKrupp Steel, Arcelor Mittal, and Corus, this event was an important milestone in the roll-out process of the new SAP SCM functionality. Business and IT experts gained initial insight into the new SAP SCM functionality at the event. Customer and prospect requirements – the main drivers of the enhancements – will continue to help SAP gain a stronger position in the steel market.

Customer feedback on enhancements in SAP SCM, as well as the event, has been very positive. A similar event taking place in the United States is planned for this summer.
