Chemicals giant Henkel is number one worldwide in treatment of metal surfaces and the largest maker of products based on plant and animal oils and fats. It also offers the world's broadest range of high-quality adhesives, and leads the European market in several product categories, including detergents, household cleansers, and toiletries.

Spanning 26 companies and joint ventures in 12 countries, Henkel Asia Pacific needed a standard IT solution that supported multiple languages and currencies, with the flexibility to accommodate country-specific requirements within the scope of its "international data harmonization initiative".

It chose SAP's R/3 to manage all its principal business functions worldwide. "R/3's internationality was what convinced us. Also crucial was that, although it is a standard package, we can easily customize it to suit our particular needs."

Implementation of SAP R/3 within Henkel Asia Pacific has been fast-paced since beginning in late 1993. Hong Kong was first, followed by Taiwan in May 1994. The rest of the region will follow soon. All companies will use the FI Financial Accounting, CO Controlling, MM Materials Management, and SD Sales and Distribution modules, plus the PP Production Planning component where relevant.
