TECHNOLOGY PARTNERS
SGI AND SAP
With Linux gaining momentum as the open-source solution worldwide, enterprises that rely on SAP solutions have a compelling new option for implementing flexible IT infrastructures. SAP solutions are certified, supported, and available on the SGI Altix server platform for Linux environments. The certification means that SAP customers can leverage the same scalable, high-throughput with SGI servers already adopted by many of the world's leading automakers, energy giants, pharmaceutical companies, and manufacturers.
Alliance Overview
How would life in the enterprise improve if you had the technology to seamlessly and dynamically extend your underlying hardware platform to precisely meet the rigorous demands of today's flexible, service-oriented enterprise? Well, that day is here. The Linux-based SGI Altix server family enables the exact match of SAP software and SAP Business Suite applications with commodity hardware components and open-source operating systems. This unique combination provides just-in-time information delivery, simple system administration, enterprise-class maintenance, unparalleled price performance, and a total cost of ownership (TCO) that makes for an outstanding and lasting value.
Key Customer Benefits
Using Altix driving Linux enterprise infrastructures, you can more easily and affordably consolidate your resources to reduce ownership costs. You have a proven, scalable, and cost-efficient platform for deploying SAP solutions on Linux. According to Gartner, a leading global consulting firm, by 2008, 60% of enterprises with 500 or more employees will migrate 80% of their UNIX applications to Linux.
You can also reduce ownership costs with the economies of scale offered by Intel Itanium 2 processors and the open-source Linux operating system. And you can minimize risk and lower the expense of upgrades, migrations, and consolidations. SGI delivers the following benefits:
- Faster time to decision, time to solution, and time to competitive advantage
- 10 to 100 times better decision support at a lower TCO and lower risk
- Scalability to deliver real-time business intelligence to everyone in your organization who can benefit from it
- Computer systems and infrastructure based on dedicated CPU, memory, and I/O blades for scalability in all dimensions and the flexibility for any change
Capabilities and Industry Expertise
The SGI Altix family of flexible, service-oriented, Linux-based servers has been developed from a long history of high-performance database and computing technologies. You can configure these highly flexible systems as a single image using one Linux operating system or multiple nodes using multiple Linux operating systems.
The SGI NUMAflex architecture enables seamless connection for single image systems and rapid reconfiguration for high-growth or volatile environments that require flexible redeployment of resources. Multiple node clusters are also available for high availability, scalability, and disaster recovery requirements. This pay-as-you-grow architecture provides a lower entry cost and a longer deployment of resources, creating an infrastructure with lower costs over longer periods of time than other conventional server platforms.
For real-time deployments, the SGI Altix system enables more of the database to be in memory at any given time. And, for memory-resident database deployments, we can contain the entire database in memory with full persistence and recoverability. This translates to very high-performance solutions that meet the instant response requirement of many applications.
