TECHNOLOGY PARTNERS

EGENERA AND SAP

Alliance Overview

Egenera became an SAP global technology partner in May 2005 – the first enterprise hardware vendor in more than 10 years to earn this designation. Achievements include hardware certification by SAP to run all SAP software on the Egenera BladeFrame system. Egenera has attained the SAP Adaptive Computing Certificate of conformity on the Microsoft Windows operating system. With its Egenera SAP Customer Competence Center in Walldorf, Germany, Egenera ensures the latest certification and global customer support.

Key Customer Benefits

Running the SAP NetWeaver platform and SAP applications on the Egenera BladeFrame infrastructure system, with its Processing Area Network (PAN) architecture, can dramatically reduce complexity and overall costs in your data center, while enhancing the scalability, availability, manageability, flexibility, and performance of mission-critical applications. Seamless integration with the Adaptive Computing Controller tool from SAP enables dynamic allocation of SAP application services to the Egenera BladeFrame virtual servers, providing both application and infrastructure virtualization.

Egenera's PAN architecture is an ideal infrastructure platform for the SAP NetWeaver platform and enterprise service-oriented architecture (enterprise SOA) because PAN provides the necessary flexibility and high availability out of the box without the need for additional software or hardware.

Compared with traditionally architected servers, the Egenera BladeFrame can save up to 50% in total costs over a 3-year period with substantial top-line benefits for SAP installations.

Bottom-line benefits include a lower total cost of ownership (TCO). You can reduce hardware and software costs with up to 70% savings on capital and maintenance costs, and you can lower labor costs for configuration and ongoing support by up to 80%.

Top-line benefits include:

  • Increased agility and flexibility by aligning adaptive environment resources to match business needs quickly and easily
  • Faster time to market by reducing the average time from procurement to fully provisioned hardware from 30-plus days to minutes
  • Faster application response time through high-speed application data transfers, yields network-intensive communication between servers
  • Higher system availability through less infrastructure downtime
  • Increased simplicity by reducing the number of compute and network resources by more than 70%

Capabilities and Industry Expertise

Egenera has been shipping its innovative datacenter virtualization system since 2001, bringing unmatched experience and innovation to fortune 500 companies, service providers, and government agencies worldwide. Customers include America Online, Vodafone, Credit Suisse First Boston, Standard Chartered PLC, SAVVIS, Emory Healthcare, Shanghai Bio, T–Systems, and the United States Census Bureau.

Egenera's PAN architecture enables utility computing by providing a pool of stateless processing nodes - Egenera Processing Blade modules – connected via a high-speed, low-latency fabric. These processing nodes contain no disk drives, network interface cards, or host bus adapters – nothing that would give the server a specific identity or state. Instead, all points of state and identity have been moved to a fabric switch, enabling virtualization of both servers and connecting data center infrastructure.

Because the switch is controlling stateless servers, the built-in intelligence can deliver a true utility-based platform that seamlessly provides:

  • Server failover, delivering high availability to every application
  • Disaster recovery across multiple data centers
  • Automated load balancing
  • Rapid scale up, scale down, configuration, and reconfiguration of servers
  • Consolidation of servers and I/O connectivity

Instead of plugging cables and components all this is controlled via the PAN Manager graphical user interface.

Testimonials

"Egenera leads the industry in virtualization, blade technology, SAN connectivity, mission-critical Linux and Windows, and enterprise-class hardware based on x86 processors. The PAN architecture is an excellent design uniquely well suited to utility computing."
Kil-Sub Lee, Vice President, SK C&C

"BladeFrame reacts proactively to impending overloads and recognizes disturbances in the whole system independently. Thanks to the rapid redeploy capability, the application can be assigned to a more efficient server in the pool or to a failover system."
Klaus Richter, Director IT Infrastructure and Support, Fujitsu Siemens Computers

"Combining SAP solutions with the Egenera BladeFrame running Windows Server 2003 offers enterprise customers a robust, proven alternative to Unix. Microsoft is pleased to be part of this value-driven platform designed to meet the needs of world-class data centers."
Sean Thompson, Managing Director SAP Strategy and Alliance, Microsoft

"We are proud to have Egenera as one of the first SAP partners being certified for SAP with the Solaris 10 OS on x64 platforms. We anticipate that the combination of Egenera's market leading virtualized infrastructure, together with the Solaris 10 OS, will provide SAP customers with resilient virtualization on top of a widely-deployed and proven operating system. We expect that our joint customers will embrace the combination, and cut costs and complexity."
Juan Carlos Soto, Vice President Market Development, Sun Microsystems
