Powercor Australia is an electricity distributor in Victoria, Australia, and manages the poles, wires and equipment (including meters) for approximately 700,000 customers. Their power network spans both densely populated areas and rural countryside. Since reliable power is critical to the safety and growth of Victorian communities, new state regulations mandated that Powercor replace all aging meters with SMART meters.

With the government mandate involving a full compliance deadline of four years, Powercor needed a fast and reliable mobile device management platform to transition the vast number of devices in the field. The deployment, management, uptime and security of these devices were a top priority.

Today, Powercor manages three of their business groups (Asset Inspectors, Smart Meter Technicians and Fault Crews) with SAP Afaria. Configuring devices has been reduced from 3 hours to 10 minutes. Users in the field can simply turn on the device, log in and get their job done.
The future with SAP
The future direction for Powercor Australia is to expand their mobility processes across other areas of the business. They are also looking at expanding their SAP portfolio by adding the Sybase Unwired Platform to assist in managing Android tablets, iPads and iPhones.
