    • The Dow Chemical Company is a science and technology company with 150 manufacturing sites located in 35 different countries, serving customers in over 160 countries in the world. We're looking at implementing the SAP NetWeaver stack primarily because our business models are changing, and the markets we're going into and the geography markets we're going into require us to have a lot more flexibility, agility, and adaptability to support the needs in those business markets and those geographies that our current software stack just won't support. The need for us to have standardized master data to support SAP and non-SAP transaction applications and global reporting are paramount to us. We're very strong in having centralized master data management. And the SAP MDM product, we believe, is the right vehicle that allows us to manage not only the master data objects that SAP is promoting, with most folks going into the ERP systems and the CRM area, but we believe we can use it for many more objects that we would like to have standardized, centralized, coordination and syndication across our SAP and non-SAP stack. In addition to MDM as part of the NetWeaver framework, we believe that going to enterprise service-oriented architecture is a key foundation for our next-generation technical architecture within the company. We believe that enterprise services are the key to adding our flexibility, agility, and adaptability that we need to support our changing business models and our move into new geographic markets. So we see the componentization, the standardization, of these services as the first key to building adaptable, flexible solutions that our businesses and our work processes can support. For Dow, what this means is we have an initiative for scale. And most people, when you hear the word scale, believe we're getting bigger. We're actually thinking that many of our joint ventures and our business opportunities will involve much smaller companies. But we want to take the best of what Dow has from their standardized work processes and business processes and be able to deploy those on a scale that fits a company of 40,000 or a company of 400. And so the way to do this is to have standardized services to ensure consistency of capability, while at the same time allowing for the flexibility and adaptability. SAP is our strategic supplier for transaction-based applications. And we've had a strong partnership for 15 or so years. We find them to be very helpful in trying to make sure that we're successful by helping us with resources, access to strategies and road maps for us to better understand what the tools can do today, what the tools can do tomorrow, and then providing us with some of their best and brightest to help us deploy our first implementation so that we can get the best advantage of learning from the pilots that we're running.
