History

A family story

Florida Crystals traces its origins back five generations, when the Fanjul family began farming and producing sugar in Cuba in the 1850’s. After the communist takeover of Cuba, Alfonso left to reestablish the business in South Florida in 1960. Under the leadership of Alfonso “Alfy” Fanjul and Jose “Pepe” Fanjul, the company has grown to be one of the largest, most innovative and successful agriculture companies in the world. It sells products under the Domino, C&H, Florida Crystals, Redpath, Jack Frost, and Tate & Lyle brands.

The Challenge

Desperate need to integrate disparate technologies

For decades, Florida Crystals Corporation (FCC) has been increasing its production and distribution capacity by acquiring other sugar companies. In addition to increasing operating complexity, these acquisitions have also meant integrating disparate technology infrastructures.

The challenge has been finding technology solutions that support FCC’s business requirements while addressing the challenges that accompany its growth-through-acquisition strategy.

Enter SAP

Sweet success stands the test of time

As a commodity-based business, FCC always seeks ways to reduce corporate overhead to maintain profitability. But growth through acquisition has resulted in a complex, geographically diverse organization that has made the centralization of key functions difficult.

The decision to work with SAP was easy because FCC has been an SAP customer since 1995 and has spent the last two years experimenting with SAP’s cloud-based solutions. Furthermore, SAP has continually demonstrated value to FCC by automating manual and routine work, optimizing workflows and mobility, and providing real-time analytics.

The SAP Experience

Well-crystallized partnership

The long-term engagement between Florida Crystals Corporation and SAP has resulted in a relationship built on collaboration and innovation. Along with technology partner Virtustream, SAP has helped transform information systems at FCC. Specifically, Virtustream and SAP have created an enterprise-class cloud version of SAP HANA, managed as a consumption-based solution.

All enterprise resource planning and business warehousing functions at FCC have been moved to the cloud. Virtustream xStream™ tools simplify cloud monitoring and management, enabling Florida Crystals to forget about heterogeneous environments, geographic dispersion, and repetitive tasks. Instead, Florida Crystals can focus on business.

Running Better

Migration to the cloud solution took only 180 hours.

FCC has gained multiple benefits, including faster analytics, agility to scale, greater speed, and an intuitive user experience that enables greater mobility and workflow flexibility.

Today

Dynamically scalable solution

Florida Crystals Corporation’s hardware and software infrastructure is easier and more cost-effective to operate and maintain. The centralized and consolidated data and applications in the cloud provide both speed and flexibility. And now, FCC is in the process of customizing user interfaces for the dynamically scalable SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud solution.

Journey Ahead

Keeping our head in the cloud

Moving forward, Florida Crystals Corporation is looking to leverage hosting capabilities for additional SAP Business Suite applications and other solutions from the SAP cloud portfolio. FCC is also planning to work with certified partners to build compatible custom cloud applications and services that take advantage of the robust, powerful SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud platform.
