SAP Open: Distinctive History

With a long, exceptional history, the SAP Open was once known as the Pacific Coast Championships. When the Open era dawned in tennis in 1968, the tournament's growth accelerated, and it attracted a number of notable sponsors. One of the oldest tennis competitions in the United States, the SAP Open draws some of the most talented athletes from the ATP circuit. These players represent the best in professional tennis, and join a prestigious roster of past champions that includes John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras, and Andre Agassi.

Over the last 30 years, many players who made their first gained celebrity at this event as teenagers rapidly went on to win a Grand Slam. Within a year of reaching the finals or winning at the SAP Open, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Stefan Edberg, and Michael Chang all won Grand Slam titles.
