Foundations of the Toyota Production System Webcast
Establish Standardized Work & Sustain Your Lean Initiative with TWI Training
| For years, researchers have slowly uncovered the secrets of the Toyota Production System (TPS). Only recently have we understood Toyota's unique ability to achieve standardized work and how they are able to sustain gains...and it's not a modern invention! Research has shown that a 60-year old, U.S. training program called TWI, or Training Within Industry, has played a vital role in the development and sustainability of TPS. |
|
Toyota adopted TWI after World War II and still uses critical aspects of it to this day. TWI gives vital skills to front-line supervisors through three separate programs:
- Job Instruction -- Helps supervisors develop a well-trained workforce resulting in less scrap and rework, fewer accidents, and less tool and equipment damage.
- Job Methods -- Helps produce the desired quantity of quality products in less time by making the best use of the people, machines, and materials.
- Job Relations -- When problems arise, it teaches supervisors how to get the facts, weigh them, make the decision, take action, and check results.
This Webcast features former Toyota professional John Shook, who shares his first-hand experience with TWI and provides his perspectives on how Toyota uses Job Instruction training to quickly train new employees on their standardized work, the foundation of TPS and building blocks for Kaizen. He will also share how TWI enables Toyota to quickly cross-train employees to create a highly mobile workforce. Shook spent 10 years at Toyota transferring its production, engineering, and management systems from Japan to its overseas affiliates and suppliers.
This online event also features Patrick Graupp, who was TWI trained in Japan in the 1980s while working for Sanyo. He shares stories and results of companies who have discovered TWI as the missing ingredient to attain and sustain standard work as the foundation for continuous improvement. Grupp was North America's first TWI Master Trainer since the end of WWII.
