Founded in 1997, SAP Development Center China was later officially established as SAP Labs China on November 20, 2003. As one of the eight SAP global Research and Development Centers , it plays a key role in design and development, as well as leading products delivery for global, Asia Pacific and China markets. SAP Labs China provides end-to-end product development, specifically focusing on small and mid-size businesses, financial and human resource management and Netweaver development.

As a strategic R&D center, SAP Labs China has become one of the fastest growing subsidiaries of SAP. Within 2004 alone, employee growth rate doubled. By October 2005, SAP Labs China became the fifth SAP R&D center with over 450 employees. With the on-going construction of the new campus located in Shanghai Pudong Software Park and the launch of Chengdu branch, SAP Labs China will further strengthen its commitment to the regional and local market, while maintaining a high-speed growth rate. It also plans to increase the employee staff to 1500 by 2008 and sustain its position as a world-class R&D center.

SAP Labs China focuses on software development for small and midsize enterprises (SMEs) with R&D work that encompasses the entire product life cycle from market research through prototyping, development, rollout and support. Concepts originated by SAP Labs China—such as the SAP® Best Practices Baseline Package of implementation procedures, documentation and preconfiguration settings, and the recently developed toolkit for the SAP Safe Passage program—have gone on to become mainstream offerings used by SAP customers around the world.

Labs China also acts as a regional technology and solution center supporting fast-growing markets across Asia, including Australia , China , Japan , Korea , New Zealand and India .
